Als Erfinder nennt der Antrag aus dem Jahr 2004 Sanjay Ghemawat und Jeffrey Dean. Sie hatten in demselben Jahr das Map/Reduce-Verfahren in einem Vortrag (PDF-Datei) auf der OSDI-Konferenz vorgestellt. Es eignet sich besonders für den Einsatz in massiv parallelen Umgebungen, deren Knoten die Map- und Reduce-Schritte unabhängig voneinander ausführen können. (ck)

Kleiner Realitätscheck in Sachen Datenschutz:
Blizzard hat die Charakterdatenbank von "World of Warcraft" erweitert. Neben viel Bling Bling kann man sich jetzt einen RSS-Feed zu allen halbwegs wichtigen Events eines Charakters geben lassen. Dieser minutengenaue Feed zählt zB auf, wann der Charakter welchen Boss getötet hat oder wann er welchen nützlichen Gegenstand bekam. Im Regelfall ist das schlichtweg ein Tracking der Onlinezeiten.
Hier die dazugehörige Diskussion im offiziellen deutschen Forum.
Tenor: Gut fürs Spiel, schlecht fürs RL.

“— KotakuWanted on drug dealing charges, Alfred Hightower skipped the country after a warrant was issued for his arrest. But he didn't stop playing World of Warcraft and that's how police caught him. The Howard County Sheriff's Department in Indiana discovered that Hightower, was a big fan of some "warlock and witches game", eventually piecing together that it was World of Warcraft.
Blizzard provided the sheriff the suspect's IP address, account information and history, his billing address, and his online screen name and preferred server. Deputies then used the information to pinpoint Hightower's location in Canada.
